A 'horrendous crime'
Home invasions on Imperial Oaks Drive in Rockford and Favor Road were the 27th and 31st home invasions investigated by the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department and Rockford Police Department through May 2 this year. The incidents shocked the region because of an unusual level of violence.
What is a home invasion? It's not a home owner's presence that turns a burglary into a home invasion: it's violence. A break-in turns into a home invasion when a criminal uses force or the threat of force.
How common are they? Detectives investigate 88 home invasions each year on average in the Rockford area, 31 through May 5 which is about the same pace as recent years.
The map: Using public records requests, the Rockford Register Star compiled information from the Winnebago County Sheriff and Rockford police on home invasions from 2010 to May 2013. The information was used to map each location of a home invasion. It illustrates they are most common in high-crime areas, but happen in all parts of the city and county.
